For most Canadian stores that want to launch quickly and spend as little time as possible on technical upkeep, Shopify is the better choice. WooCommerce is better if you want full control over your store, already run a WordPress site, or need custom functionality that Shopify’s platform makes difficult or expensive.
Both platforms run successful Canadian stores of every size. The right choice depends on how you want to run the business, not on which one is “better” in general.
The core difference
Shopify is a hosted platform. You pay a monthly subscription, and Shopify handles hosting, security, updates, and checkout. WooCommerce is a free plugin that turns a WordPress site into a store. You pay for hosting and any paid extensions, and you, or your developer, are responsible for updates, security, and performance.
Costs
Shopify charges a monthly plan fee, plus payment processing, plus any paid apps. WooCommerce itself is free, but you pay for hosting, a theme or custom build, paid extensions, and someone’s time to maintain the site. Over a few years the totals often end up closer than people expect: Shopify costs more in subscriptions and apps, WooCommerce costs more in maintenance.
Check current pricing on each provider’s site, since plan prices change.
Payments in Canada
- Shopify Payments is available in Canada and lets you accept cards in CAD with no extra transaction fee. If you use a third-party payment provider instead, Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top.
- WooCommerce works with Stripe, PayPal, Square, Moneris, and other gateways through extensions. There’s no platform transaction fee, only your processor’s rates.
Sales tax: GST, HST, and PST
Both platforms can charge Canadian sales tax by province, including GST, HST, PST, and QST. Shopify includes Canadian tax settings built in. WooCommerce handles it through its tax settings or a tax extension. On either platform, have your accountant confirm how you should be registered and charging, since that depends on your business, not the software.
Maintenance and security
This is the biggest practical difference. Shopify keeps the platform patched and online for you. With WooCommerce, WordPress core, your theme, and every plugin need regular updates, plus backups, security monitoring, and someone to fix things when an update breaks the checkout. That’s very manageable with a care plan, but it’s ongoing work.
Flexibility and customization
WooCommerce gives you full access to the code and database, so almost anything is possible: custom pricing rules, complex product configurators, B2B wholesale portals, or deep integrations with your ERP. Shopify is flexible through themes and apps, but you work within its platform rules, and some customizations need paid apps or a Shopify Plus plan.
SEO
Both platforms can rank well. WooCommerce, being WordPress, offers more control over URLs, structured data, and content. Shopify has some fixed URL structures, such as /products/ and /collections/, but handles the technical basics well. In practice, site speed, content quality, and product page structure matter far more than the platform.

Quick decision guide
- Choose Shopify if you want to launch fast, don’t want to manage hosting or updates, and sell fairly standard physical products.
- Choose WooCommerce if you already have a WordPress site, want full control and ownership, need unusual product logic, or want to avoid platform transaction fees and app subscriptions.
- Either works for most small and mid-sized Canadian stores. Pick the one your team is comfortable running day to day.
Frequently asked questions
Can I move from WooCommerce to Shopify later, or the other way?
Yes. Products, customers, and order history can be migrated in either direction. The key is mapping old URLs to new ones with 301 redirects so you keep your search rankings.
Is Shopify Payments available in Canada?
Yes. Shopify Payments works for Canadian stores and charges in CAD. Using a different payment provider on Shopify adds a Shopify transaction fee.
Is WooCommerce really free?
The plugin is free, but a working store needs hosting, a theme, often some paid extensions, and regular maintenance, so expect ongoing costs.
Which is better for SEO?
Both can rank well. WooCommerce offers more control over URLs and structure, but speed, content, and product page quality matter more than the platform you pick.
